Targeted metabolomics refers to experiments that aim to accurately measure the abundance of previously identified metabolites, such as validation studies which typically include a large number of samples. It usually requires the use of analytical standards for absolute quantification. It may be used to confirm results from a previous discovery based metabolomic profiling experiment or based on results from a genomics and/or proteomics study.

The keys to success in quantitative metabolomics are accuracy, high throughput and reliability. These analyses are more conventional and typically require the processing of hundreds to thousands of samples.
